Should I get an insurance for my rental car?

I’m planning to rent a car in the Azores and prices seem very low, like 3 euros per day. The insurance costs about 12 euros per day. Four times the rental cost.

The insurance it covers:

  • Deductible/excess charge for damage or theft
  • Repair costs, including windows, mirrors, wheels
  • Towing and taxi expenses
  • Lost keys or lockout fees
  • Administrative charges

What is already covered without or with insurance is:

  • Unlimited mileage
  • Collision Damage Waiver (deductible: ~US$ 1410.00)
  • Theft Protection
  • Roadside Assistance
  • Third Party Liability (TPL)
  • Airport surcharge
  • Free modifications
  • State Tax

I’m tempted to rent a car without the insurance for a few months, treat it well, park it in underground parks, then the last day wash the most obvious stains (if any) and return it.

The alternative is to rent a car with the insurance only for the days I need it (two or three times per week).

Do you think it’s a good idea to rent for long time with no insurance?

Would you suggest getting a long-term insurance (like one lasting few months) from a different provider rather than the car rental?

Will the car rental company try to scam me into paying large costs (like rain marks or footprints inside) if I don’t get their insurance?

Should I know anything else before deciding?
